August Bank Holiday Trip

Planning meeting for August bank holiday
We had a very productive planning session for the August bank holiday weekend trip. We determined a basic route and made reservations for our two overnight points. The route includes a 20 minute ferry crossing to experience something similar to what we'll have to do touring France next year. The wheels are now set in motion for the trip and more detailed arrangements will be made in the weeks ahead before D day.
The outline for the 3 days are:
Day 1 Saturday - Aug 2, 2008

391 km(243 mi) - 5h 26min
Leave from Dublin Saturday morning 08:00, heading for Killarney, stopping off in Youghal.
Day 2 Sunday - Aug 3, 2008
308 km (191 mi) 5h 12min
Day 2 starts with a trip around the ring of Kerry, then up north towards the cliffs of Moher ending up in Coolin where we overnight again.

Day 3 Monday - Aug 4, 2008

283 km (176 mi) 3h 52 min

Head back to Dublin for some well needed rest before the normal workweek starts again.

Update on the plans

With the tour date coming closer the biggest factor working against is is funding our adventure. We realised that this is never going to happen without some proper financial planning. The wheels were set in motion, savings accounts opened and we're saving and holding each other accountable to achieve our targets for August 2009 to fund our European adventure.

We're starting out much smaller and doing a local trip round Ireland, we undertook several weekend outings and I've done a couple of cross country trips on the bike for work to get motorcycle fit and to test the touring gear.

I need to work on the luggage and waterproofing, the boots are doing fairly ok, the GPS is good, but useless when it's pouring down as I can not see it well enough to follow directions. Sound is a big problem with a helmet and stick in headphones is a waste of time, they fall out and wind noise is a big problem.
